p.908 Kopseng
It is not possibble to say for sure what the original dominionsin
the old days of authority, but this dominion stretched northwards tothe
creek by Juvet, from Storelva into the strips of land by Numedal. Inthe
same way are Skar, Rodningen and Stalsbratan parts of the old dominion
here.
Reidulv Olsson traded for himself Rolalsgard(?) and LopsendBinggeenga
and Ovstaenga in Sole and Lauvli. Gudbrand Kopseng sold then Medalento
Asle Frovoll. Testimony was taken up about this in 1587, and it hadmoved
down four or five generations since then.
In the canaster (medieval book stating a manor's lands andrights)
from 1528 a Norfue Kaupssengh is named. He and Halgrim Halge were incontrol
of the boundries of Singedal (except Eidalsroa) and a portion ofEggedal.
According to the canaster of 1578, Koffseng gave money and feed to theking.
A letter from 1594, dated Holmen, was presented to the parliament'sjudi-
ciary in 1658. In this it was shown that Kopsseng had been in thefamily
100 years at that time, from 1494. It is the same family at theKopsseng
farms today.
1. With the settlement at Sund in 1598 after Gunnar Torgeirson, his
son Engebret Gunnarson got 16 units of value and 1 pound of goods inKopseng
2. Torstein Strand mortgaged 5 units in Kopseng in 1605 toEivand
Ellingson, and the same 5 units was given by Torsein Olsen Engar tohis
daughter Ales, married to Gullik Gjerde in Lyngdal, in 1618. EivandEllingson
Kopseng paid the war tax in 1615: 17 1/2 units of value in Kopseng, 31/2
in Sund, 2 1/2 in Skinnes and 4 in Surteberg, both in Krodersherad, in
Bergen 2, in 1624: in Narum 5, and Tveiten 5 with goods in Kopseng,Skinnes,
Bergan and Sund. He had the inheritance rights to the farm atKopseng.
Eivand was summoned by the tax collector who felt that Eivandhadn't
paid the right amount of taxes on his crops at Kopseng in 1623. Hewas
sentenced to pay 40 silcer coins, that is to say the amount worth 8 -10
cattle at that time. He traded away the goods he had in Sund, Narumand
Skinnes in 1629 to Engebret Gunnarsen (not Audunsen) Sund and got 181/2
units of value in Kopseng.
Eivand kept the farm until 1634. The year before he was required
to pay 16 silver coins for raucous behavior at the parliament, together
with the honorable words he had recited vigorously to his neighbor, though
he was not(convinced of the former's sincerity).
Now Asle Strand (Vik) became the owner. It seems that he hadlived
at Vik for a time, because the renter at Kopseng was Peder until 1643when
Asle took over the property himself. He had turned Vik over to hisson
Narve to farm. Asle Kopseng owned in 1634 27 1/2 units of valueinKopseng,
10 in Vik and 9 in Eikje. From 1636 he controlled 16 1/2 in Kopseng.
He was a juryman in 1629.
Asle Narvesen from Eikje married Kjersti Olsdatter and had thefollowing
children: 1. Gunnar, married first to Ingebjorg Hakonsdatter Basum, stayed
in upper Gronhovd a time
2. Torstein, married to Ase Halvorsdatter Sole, owned halfthe farm.
3. Narve, married for the first time to Gunhild Jonsdatter,
in Asen, Eggedal. Second Joran Eivandsdatter Haugen,at
Eikje
Asle was alive in 1662, when he witnessed in a case at Holmen. He
was 80 years old when he died in 1664.
There was a settlement at Kopseng the year after Asle andKjersti.
The portion between Osteng and Haugen was given up in 1637. AsleKopseng
paid the war tax in1644 by himself. He owned after a time severalfarms,
but he traded, bought and sold such that he seldom had a lot ofearthly
goods at hand at any one time. In this way he had at one time 14units
of value in Engar and 13 in Hovde at Snarum, i n Kopseng, he had inthe
1650's 40 units. Sebjorn Skjonne in Nore, owned 3, Steinar Frovoll 11/2
and the bi shop 2 1/2 here. The goods that Sebjorn Skjonned ownedwere
entered into in 1658, that same year Asle gave the southern half ofthe
farm over to his son, Torstein.
After the settlement of Asle and Kjersti in 1664, the farm wasdivided
in two, so that Torstein and Gunnar each got his part, Torstein theSouth and
Gunnar the lower and most northern part, that which Asle owned intilhis
death. They were to jointly own the house until Gunnar, throughbuilding
or other means, showed him out.
It is said that the house at Kopseng lay further north thansouthern
Kopseng now, and that the hill where the house now lies was a restingplace
for people and animals throughout the countryside.
