Information from cousin Pat Long Shanaman, Joseph, Oregon, 6/7/90:
She thinks that Jacob's father was John, from something she has found,didn't
catch what it was. She will send me a bunch of info, when she getstime.
Jacob retired in Elgin, OR
Pat's convinced that there is Cherokee blood through the Waymires, butdoesn't
know any Indian name, or have any other proof.
There is Cherokee blood through John and Allen's sister Delilah.
She married Mac Shelton, whose name originally was Magawa, thenchanged to
MacKenzie, then to Mac.
Allen's wife, is Permelia.
John was the eldest, Allen next, then the 7 girls.
Pat's Grandmother Long put together a family record, and gave it toPat about
10 years ago. Pat's been working on it since then.
Her Father was Del Long, Grandfather-Harlen Long, G-Grandfather-AllenLong.
Her father has a cousin Genevieve (SP?), about 64 yrs old, who hasinfo about
the family.
Oregon Centenial History between 1900-1918 has an autobiographicalsketch
written by Jacob Long, a number of years before he died..
Jacob was born in PA, family moved to Ohio when he was 9 yrs old. Fromthere
moved to Oregon,
Came through Idaho, down the Snake River. Settled in Polk County OR,then moved
to Union County, Or. Was the first settler in the North end of thecounty, the
Thorny Draw District (lots of rose bushes).
Pat has a picture of Jacob, as well as one of Allen and John together.
She also has pictures of gravestones, etc, and knows where they livedand are
buried. Allen's house and barn are still standing near Elgin.
[An old man in Colfax about 3 yrs ago talked about the building ofGrandpa
John's barn near Colfax, in about 1888, and that his brother helpedhim. Pat
thinks that
is probably correct, because both Jacob and Allen spent some time inWhitman
County.
She has a book "The One Room
Schoolhouse",
written by woman from there.
Eastern OR College at LaGrande has newspapers from long ago, infoabout family.
Jacob owned land in Orange County, IN. John, Allen and Mary were bornthere.
John
in Dec 1846, per 1880 census for Whitman County, WA. She has, or hasseen, the
Orange County census, must have been 1850.
Jacob and Hannah were married in Ohio
Jacob's first wife Hannah died some time before Jacob was 57 yrs old,~1879. He
remarried at about that age. Pat has copy of the marriage cert. NOchildren
from 2nd marriage. Lady was Mary (daughter of John and PriscillaHuffman),
who had been married to Cy Cummins, and Solomen (sic) Sturgill. Jacobdied
about 10 years before she did. Article in file about her.
Pat has talked with a Ruth Killian (in her nineties) who knew
Jacob, when she was a little girl. Her father Stratton or Statten,rented
Jacob's place after Jacob retired. She said that Jacob was very neatand
orderly, as was his ranch.
Pat has an "adult" foster home, takes care of older people.
Oregon Historical Society has a lot of information on the Long Family.
Pat contacted Washington State University at Pullman, who suggestedshe try
Colfax. She put add in paper, and my Aunt Mildred answered. Theyhave talked
and corresponded for some time, never met.
Pat's Grandmother, Harlen Long's wife, was an excellent record keeper,both
farm and genealogical. Had spent several years collecting theinformation.
