John and Mary were married by Reverend Mr. Simons. Their marriage isthe third in a list of the first ten marriages in Andover,Massachusetts.
John came from England on either the "Arabella" in 1630 or the"Mary and John" in 1633. He landed at either Newbury or Salem,Massachusetts on April 11, 1630. When he arrived he would have been 8years old. He may have been under the care of or indentured toChristopher Osgood. He was probably with this family for 14 years. Heremoved to Andover by 1644. He stands seventeenth in the list of the23 original settlers of Andover. Andover was officially settled onMay 6, 1846. He was a free man in 1673 and received one of the firstgrants of land in Andover; his property was beside Andrew Foster's onthe road leading from Ipswich through ndover to Billerica, probablyBoston Road. He held a variety of occupations. He was fence viewer in1669 and constable in 1674. He and his sons had an iron works on theShawshin River, supposedly near the site of the Marland Mills.
He served in King Phillip's War. He took the Freeman's Oath in1662and/or in 1669. When he was over fifty he fought the Indians toprotect the struggling villages on the New England shores. He died in1690. His six page will left Hannah an abundant provision. He acquireda seven-acre house lot in Andover, and left an estate of over 200acres in the town. His estate was worth 328 pounds, including houseand land worth over 260 pounds.
