From conversation with Lois 24 April 1993
Said GPa never took out Canadian citizenship, only got permission tohomestead
in Canada. Clarence went with him. They were not successful and leftafter a
few years. Clarence went back to Park Rapids and assume that GPa didtoo.
Clarence had married while in Canada and had a daughter named Ruby. After a
few years back in Park Rapids, the wife went back to Canada takingRuby with
her. They apparently were divorced as she remarried and had two boys. She
then died and the husband took Ruby back to her father, Clarence, inPark
Rapids. Ruby was 11 when she was brought back.
GPa's failure with the homestead was not new. He apparently neverstuck with
anything.
Lois's description of GPa is as follows:
He was very aristocratic looking. His carriage was excellent and hecarried a
cane, which he did not need, and twirled it and was very sauve anddebonair.
He had an excellent sense of humor and was lots of fun. The childrenloved him
and had a good time with him. He was very "laid back" and avoided all
confrontation. If Grandma started a fight he'd just take his hat andleave.
He would maybe be gone for months at a time. Grandma was always sickand did
not have much patience with him.
He came to visit at Medical Lake one time. He hadn't seen dad in along time
but greeted him as if he had just seen him the day before. Never gotexcited
about things. "Very cool" not in terms of cold attitude but easygoing.
He finally rented a little house near the lake, Lois couldn't rememberthe name
of the street, next door to man named Billy Neighbors, an old man. Hewas
called Uncle Billy. Uncle Billy's house burned down. This might helptolocate
GPa's house. Lois said her friends always liked going to GPa's houseas he was
a lot of fun and they ate bread, from Mama no doubt, and apple butter.
Mabel got it into her head he was too old to live alone and wasdetermined to
take him off to Walla Walla to the Odd Fellows Home. Dad and Mama didnot want
him to go as they considered they could take care of him just fine. Nogo.
Lois's last memory of him was him looking out the window of DocConnelly's car
waving to them and they were all crying. He contracted jaundice andMama and
Daddy went to Walla Walla to see him. He was in a "terrible littleroom" and
they decided that as soon as he was well enough to travel they weregoing to
bring him home. However, he died there. He is buried in the OddFellows
Cemetery there.
