[721] He came to this country in the military service of the Dutch WestIndia Company. The first record of him is found in the "Minutes of theCourt of Fort Orange and Beverewyck" (Albany, NY) in the preceedingsdated April 29, 1653. This record says that Hendrick was given thegarden previously owned by Dirrick Bensinck on the condition that hecart bricks for the construction of the palisades surrounding thefort. Hendrick was married by October 14, 1653, but the exact date ofhis marriage is unknown. He was an innkeeper. He was counted among the"most prosperous and loyal citizens" of Albany. He was lietenant ofthe burgher guard. In 1652 he came from fort Orange to help build afort at Wiltwyck (now Hurley, NY). He decided to remain near Wiltwyckso he sold his Albany property and was given a land grant nearWiltwyck. He was wounded twice in an Indian attack in 1663. He servedwith the board of magistrates as "schepen," an assistant to theburghermasters who had a voice on the council board. On March 4, 1682,he made out his will which described him as " being at present sick inbed, though in full possession of his mental faculties, consideringthe certainty of death though the hour of its coming is uncertain."
