[596]
Md 22 Oct 1806 to Nancy Parker. Died 14 Feb 1829, or 1831, accordingto a
pension application filed by Rebecca 22 April 1871. When he diedintestate
three men were appointed by the Nicholas Co., KY court to divide apiece of
land betwen his widow Rebecca, and those of his house. Among thoselisted
was Samuel D. Wheeler, who is my Great Grandfather Samuel Dudley
Wheeler. I am certain that he is the right one, although there was atleast
one other Samuel D. Wheeler in the county during this time, because ofthe
brothers Mason Baxter and Stark being among the heirs of Joseph. Therecould
not possibly be another family with that combination of names. Theothers
listed are those who are found in various tax, land
and census lists for Nicholas Co., from 1810 through 1860. Rebecca, age 60 was
living with a son Stark Wheeler in 1850, as seen from the 1850 census, then in
1851 and 1871 according to the pension application.
Genealogist Martha Wilson of Maysville, Ky believed that the NancyParker and
Rebecca were one in the same, Nancy Rebecca Parker, partially based onthe
fact that there is a Nancy Rebecca Wheeler who was the daughter of oneof
Samuel's brothers. As it turned out, he married Nancy in 1806, thenmarried
the widow Rebecca Craig in August of 1807, 1808, or 1809 (as listed invarious
parts of the pension application). Which goes to show one that it
is necessary to find more data than just the word of one who "thinks"what she
says is correct.
It appears that Mason Baxter Wheeler was Nancy's son, then perhapsSally and/or
Benjamin were her children, but that all those whose birth dates arenine
months after Aug
1809 are Rebecca's children (for sure Joseph, Samuel Dudley, andStark.
Joseph and Rebecca's son Joseph became quite well
known in Ray and Carroll Counties, Mo, where Samuel Dudley took hisfamily in
1858.
Joseph (1785) served as a private in Capt. Thomas Metcalf's Co. of theKentucky
Militia. In various places in the application package his term ofenlistment
is listed as from 15 Mar 1812 to 15 Sep 1812, 29 Mar 1813 to 22 Sep1813, fall
of 1812 to spring or summer of 1813.
