[1204] Hawyse was heiress of Kidwelly Castle in Carmarthenshire, oneof a line of castles guarding the coastal road, built during theNorman advance in King Henry I's reign. She "married into the powerfulMarcher Lord family of de Braose; but her husband died in a campaignin 1233, by which time Kidwelly Castle was once again firmly in Welshhands, and had been for two years, Llywelyn having decided thatappeasement would not work with Henry III. The Welsh hung on toKidwelly for a long time, and only after Hawise married Patrick deChaworth in 1244 did she find someone to get her castle back for her.De Chaworth even managed to hold Kidwelly Castle during the Welshrising of 1257, though the town of Kidwelly was destroyed. But thenext year Patrick was killed in battle, and his estate went to his sonPayn, who began considerable rebuilding after his majority in about1270." The name Kidwelly or Cyd-weli signifies its position at thejunction of two streams. "Built in 1084 by William de Londres, afollower of Robert Fitz Hamon who conquered Glamorgan, the castle wasdestroyed about 1230 by Llewellyn the Great, and rebuilt about 40years later."

[1411] The Calendar of the Saints says after her husband was killed huntingshe decided to make a pilgrimage to Rome. On returning home shefounded seven churches at Ardenne of the Meuse. She also set up anabbey at the same place where she died. 17 Dec is her feast day.
